Richfields partners Marcus Maringer , Pieter van’t Veer , Naomi Klepacz , Muriel C. D. Verain , Anne Normann , Suzanne Ekman , Lada Timotijevic , Monique M. Raats and Anouk Geelen have recently published a new paper in the Nutrition Journal. The need for a better understanding of food consumption behaviour within its behavioural context has sparked the interest of nutrition researchers for user-documented food consumption data collected outside there search context using publicly available nutrition apps. The study aims to characterise the scientific, technical, legal and ethical features of this data in order to identify the opportunities and challenges associated with using this data for nutrition research.

On Tuesday 18th September 2018, EuroFIR hosted the RICHFIELDS final conference in Brussels. The conference marked the culmination of the project which, over the last three years, designed a consumer-data platform to collect and connect, compare and share information about food behaviours, to revolutionise research on every-day choices made across Europe. The event was attended by around 70 participants who work directly and indirectly with the theme of data-driven consumer research in the field of food and health.

The main aim of the conference was to highlight key results and elaborate on the way forward. The event was inaugurated with a keynote speech by Peter M. Abuja from the Medical University of Graz, followed by presentations on ‘Designing a Consumer-Data Platform’ by Lada Timotijevic from the University of Surrey, Bent Egberg Mikkelsen from Aalborg University, and Monique Raats from the University of Surrey. The first session concluded with a panel discussion about the same, moderated by Krijn Poppe from Wageningen University.

The second session focused on ‘Science Needs & Community Building’ with Pieter van ‘t Veer from Wageningen University elaborating on how the results from the RICHFIELDS project could be used for future research and endeavours in the field. This was followed by a second panel discussion, moderated once again, by Krijn Poppe. The conference concluded with a presentation from Karin Zimmerman, the project co-ordinator for RICHFIELDS. The highlight of the event were well-informed discussions on the topics of data privacy, open science, funding for research infrastructure, and the role played by citizen science and consumer studies in delivering robust results.

Ten European countries are currently working to build the most innovative virtual environment (FNH-RI) to collect and share data, tools and services on food, nutrition and health. On 19th June 2018 the RICHFIELDS project coordinator Karin Zimmermann held a workshop in Helsinki to present the challenges and benefits of a future involvement of Finland in the Research Infrastructure on Food, Nutrition and Health. An additional second meeting followed later in August and a final decision regarding a Finnish entry in the project will be made in December 2018.

The following figure illustrates the current countries involved in the FNH-RI.

Richfields partners M.J. Bogaardt , K. Zimmermann, P. Finglas and P. van’t Veer have recently published a new paper in the Journal Nutrition Bulletin. This paper delves into research on dietary intake and its determinants and their role in responding to the current epidemic of diet‐related non‐communicable chronic diseases. In order to respond to this challenge, the RICHFIELDS project was tasked with designing a research infrastructure (RI) that connects data on dietary intake of consumers in Europe, and its determinants, collected using apps and wearable sensors, from behavioural laboratories and experimental facilities and from other RIs.

Just think of what we could do if we could collect, standardise and harmonise all data available from businesses, researchers and consumers all in one place. Resources are scattered across the globe in different formats and different languages. In fact, it has become increasingly difficult for scientists to obtain data, tools, and services on food, nutrition and health.

The University of Wageningen has been working on a “Google” for food, nutrition and health to meet this challenge. The Food, Nutrition and Health Research Infrastructure (FNH-RI) involves 10 EU Members States who work closely together in the food and health domain to collect and assemble data, tools and services. Research Infrastructures are key to collect facilities, resources or services which support the scientific community to conduct top-level research.

The FHN-RI builds on the roadmap developed by the EU project EuroDISH and the recommendations of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures for a food and health research infrastructure (ESFRI). By 2027, FNH-RI plans to be officially launched and will bring together several RIs resulting from previous EU projects like the ongoing project RICHFIELDS.

Do researchers actually know how to use such a powerful tool like the FNH-RI?

The FNH-RI team led by Prof. Karin Zimmermann has outlined a new study that investigates how researchers and other users would use a research infrastructure for Food Nutrition and Health. The questionnaire plays a vital role in setting up the basis for the future of scientific and consumer data. The questionnaire would take you only 15 minutes to complete. Click on the following link to access the questionnaire – link.

What is the final goal of the FNH-RI?

FNH-RI will enable top-level research, breakthroughs and innovations to make diets healthier and more sustainable. The Consumer Data Platform designed by RICHFIELDS will pave the way to the creation of a bigger box of ideas and tools to create a more prosperous and sustainable future.

Objectives of this final event

  • Obtain feedback from stakeholders on the outputs of RICHFIELDS
  • Explore the scope for using consumer-, research- & business-generated data
  • Consider how FNH-RI would function as a resource for future food, nutrition and health research in Europe

Background information

RICHFIELDS is a three-year EU funded project that started in October 2015 and aimed to design a consumer-data platform to collect and connect, compare and share information about our food behaviours, to revolutionise research on every-day choices made across Europe. RICHFIELDS seeks to determine what facilities, resources, and services can support research to learn more about what we choose to eat, and how and why we make those choices.

FNH-RI aims to develop a top-level e-research infrastructure that enables scientists to link and exploit public-, private- and citizen-generated research data. This will be achieved through a series of measuring including new and advanced tools for data generation, and harmonisation and/ or standardisation data, enabling improved sharing of data and supporting information. FNH-RI will provide scientific services that enable users – including policy-makers, government, NGOs, food industries large and small (SMEs), farmers and consumers – to make informed decisions and choices, supporting health and a more sustainable society.

Designing a world-class infrastructure to facilitate research and making “healthy choices the easy choices” requires knowledge about our dietary habits. This knowledge comes from analysing different types of information such as what food and beverages we are buying, preparing and eating, where we eat them and with whom. Every day, consumers and businesses generate big data – large volumes of information that offer detailed descriptions of our behaviours, including time and place. If these data-rich sources could be linked and analysed, they have the potential to contribute greatly to understanding societal challenges around food and health (e.g., obesity, cardiovascular disease, sustainability).
